8-Day Great Migration Safari
Overview
This 8-day tour takes you to the famous northern circuit parks. You spend 4 days in the Serengeti, the largest and recognized for the annual migration of thousands of wildebeest and zebras. Then, the tour goes to the Ngorongoro Crater, an absolute highlight, with beautiful landscapes and easy game viewing. Finally, the tour goes to Tarangire National Park, smaller than the Serengeti but famous for its large elephant herds. The tour ends with a short hike to the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Day 1 Pick-up from the Airport
We will pick you up from the airport and then transfer you to the hotel with an optional tour of Arusha city. This short city tour will introduce you to Tanzania and prepare for your trip the next day. In the evening, we will brief you on the activities of the rest of the tour. Depending on the time you arrive in Arusha, you can take an optional short hike to Kilima Moto to view a beautiful sunset.
Day 2 Arusha to Tarangire National Park
We will pick you up from the hotel at 8:00am, and introduce you to our guide, and take the 2-hour drive to Tarangire National Park. Tarangire is known for the abundance of ancient baobab trees and boasts the country’s most significant number of elephants! You will encounter these giants up close and observe the interaction between elephant families. We will follow reported animal sightings as we do a game drive. There are plenty of herbivores like giraffes, wildebeest, and zebras. The predators (lions, cheetahs, and leopards) are more difficult to spot. Later, we will go to the river picnic site and enjoy the beautiful river view and animals while having lunch. Keep an eye out for small monkeys and baboons that will try to scare you and take your lunch! They are, however, nothing to worry about. After lunch, we will proceed with the game drive before we exit the park around 5:30pm and head to our accommodation (Ngorongoro Marera Mountain View Lodge) for dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 3 Karatu to Central Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, we will drive to Serengeti for about 6 hours (including all stops), passing through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. We will briefly stop at the gate and view the breathtaking crater for about 20 minutes. There is an optional visit to a Masai Village to learn about the daily life of the Masai people (an additional US$10 to US$20).
Serengeti National Park
Arrive late afternoon and do a game drive in Seronera (center of Serengeti). At the same time, we proceeded to do a game drive to late evening and experience the sunset in Serengeti while having a close view of the wild animals. We might be lucky and see a predator hunt! Finally, we will head to Serengeti Safari Camp.
Day 4 Northern Serengeti National Park
Today, we explore the broader parts of the Serengeti as we travel northwest and we follow the wildlife movements.
After an early breakfast, we depart on a morning game drive carrying a picnic lunch. The game drive will focus on the Mara River and hopefully see herds of the migration animals as they cross the river. We continue our game drive until the evening, when we return to Heritage Mara Camp for dinner and our overnight stay. Animals can be spotted at the camp.
Day 5 Serengeti National Park
Today, we travel west and return to the Mara River. Here, we will see formations of wildebeest as they gather and prepare to cross the Mara River. Hopefully, we will see the start of the migration!
After an early breakfast, we will depart for the game drive, have lunch, and continue the game drive until the evening. Finally, we will return to Heritage Mara Camp.
Day 6 Serengeti National Park
Seronera, Serengeti National Park
After an early breakfast, we will go on a game drive south of Serengeti toward Seronera. Eventually, we will exit the Serengeti in the late afternoon, heading to Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge. The lodge is located on the crater rim and has a spectacular view of the crater. The drive to the Ngorongoro Crater takes about 2 hours.
Day 7 Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Arusha Region
After an early breakfast, we will descend into the crater at 6:15am. The journey aims to find the black rhino. Rhinos are the hardest to spot in this beautiful crater. However, most animals will be easier to spot on the crater floor.
After lunch, we will do a game drive, ascend the crater, and return to the lodge. Upon arrival, we will pack up and depart for Tulia Boutique Hotel & Spa near Arusha.
Day 8 Excursion to Kilimanjaro
After breakfast, we will go to the Materuni Waterfalls, where you will do a short hike for about 2 hours. The vegetation, surreal views, and waterfalls are an incredible sight. From here, we proceed to a local coffee processing farm, where we will have lunch before departing for the airport.
